Since the 1970s, Chalkdust has been a leading defender of social commentary in calypso in Trinidad and Tobago. In February 2004 he won the Calypso Monarch title for the sixth time. As a public school teacher and, more recently, a university professor, Chalkdust has also written extensively on calypso history such as 'From the horse's mouth' and 'Rituals of power and rebellion'.
Dr Hollis Urban Liverpool is originally from the beautiful town of Diego Martin in Trinidad, a Trinidadian teacher, historian, scholar, and renowned calypsonian who has served as the Trinidad Director of Culture and who currently serves as the Director of the Carnival Institute. Chalkdust as he is so affectionately known by his adoring fans, fell in love with calypso as a young boy because of the significant part that it played in the in the revolution of African slaves.
"Calypso was a comfort to the slaves on the plantation, it helped them through those hard times they had to endure", said Chalkdust. "This was my inspiration to become a calypsonian"
Chalkdust has been singing calypso since 1967. He captured his sixth National crown in 2005; he is currently a Cultural Anthropologist and Professor of Social Sciences at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas. He is a Professor, a Calypsonian, and historian, a Calypso Monarch, a writer, an author of many St. Kitt reigning National King "Socrates" with Mr Hollis Liverpool books.
